Als Audio-Ingenieur und Digitalentwickler fühlte sich Scott Berry vor 4 Jahren wohl herausgefordert, die Qualität der digitalen Musikwiedergabe vom Computer seinem Anspruch nahe zu bringen, der sich an besten Schallplatten orientiert. Er suchte nach den Problemen der Digitaltechnik und wurde fündig. Viele Komponenten der Digitaltechnik stören sich gegenseitig - auch innerhalb eines Gerätes. Analoge Störungen kommen von der Stromversorgung in den Geräten und schließlich leidet der Klang eines Gerätes um so stärker, je vielseitiger es sein soll. Viele Anschlussmöglichkeiten an einem Wandler können also nicht zu klanglicher Perfektion führen, auch wenn sich solche Geräte viel leichter verkaufen lassen. Scott Berry ging den schweren Weg und ließ nur einen, den bestklingenden Signaleingang zu - USB. Und als Ausgang gibt es nur ein Paar Stereo-Cinch-Buchsen.

Das Netzkabel ist fest angeschlossen. Im Inneren arbeiten allein 5 Transformatoren für getrennte Spannungsversorgungen der verschiedenen Arbeitsbereiche. Galvanische Trennungen und aufwendige Abschirmungen verhindern das Eindringen von Störungen. Das Gehäuse wird aus Acryl gefertigt und auf Silikonfüße gestellt, um metallische Resonanzen zu vermeiden. Jedes Detail ist akribisch klanglich untersucht worden und nicht nur im Hardware-Bereich.
Auf die üblichen Kunstgriffe wie Upsampling, Digitalfilter und Analogfilter und selbst eine analoge Ausgangsstufe wurde verzichtet und damit die Dynamik und das Timing nicht angetastet. Der CAD 1543 DAC spielt alle gängigen Musikformate ab.

Jetzt kommt es "nur" noch auf die Zuspieler an, welches Ergebnis man erzielen kann. Scott Berry begab sich bis in die unterste Ebene der Computerwelt und suchte nach allen Musikbremsen. Seine in 4 Jahren gesammelten Erkenntnisse stellt er jedem Leser in Form von Scripts oder Whitepapers zur Verfügung. The CAD 1543 DAC experience is breathtaking; the experience is unforgettable….
Immediately what is very noticeable with the 1543 is that the noise floor is very, very low. Remarkably, at any output volume, no evidence of underlying distortion was been detected and this sheer ‘absence’ of a noise floor created an excellent environment for dynamic performances to naturally stage well and welcome an openness that was not previously thought as possible with digital music devices.
The 1543 is a masterpiece of digital playback perfection, it provides the clearest stage for your digital music… for all genres of music… Luckily, more than ever mentioned before, this sounds just as it should and not artificial, projecting an environment dependant on the producers vision.
 
Whilst most DAC’s will overlay some signature quality on top of the original sound, Scott’s vision has created a clear-as-can-be engineering triumph. In fact the 1543… unlike others, handles higher frequencies like an analogue machine. I never detected any form of top-end distortion. The 1543 sounds light and airy, but with bags of detail, power and stunning from the sub-bass to the ultra-sonic. It just doesn’t sound digital.
 
Conclusion: More than any other product, the CAD 1543 is an articulate beast that built from the heart. Brimming with passion and love from a mastermind maker. This is a magnificent machine. It takes nothing away from the music itself, and presents a stunning performance from start to finish. I used the 1543 with a number of computers all of them Apple Macs with either Decibel or Audirvana Plus software, Scott is a strong advocate of these computers, but has discovered that he can get slightly better results with J Play on a PC running Windows. On his first visit however. he bought a top spec Mac Mini and the result with the DAC was pretty astonishing, in fact it totally re-calibrated my expectations of computer audio. Fundamentally this is because the 1543 is such a quiet DAC. I’m not talking about noise that is usually perceptible as such but rather the noise floor, something that when it goes away the sound is so much more natural and relaxed it’s uncanny. It embodies the vision behind digital recording in the first place, Philips called it perfect sound forever but in essence.

This is an extremely refined and revealing converter, one that puts computer audio firmly in high end territory and on a level pegging with just about anything out there. S


Addendum: Just as I was ready to sit down and write this Scott sent me a prototype of the CAD Revelation (pat. pending) USB cable. This further revealed just how spectacular this DAC is, and to an extent that made all the
other USB cables I’ve got sound obviously limited. It was quite a shocker but at the end of the day it’s the DAC that’s making the magic and this one does so with astonishing fidelity.
